Make an Amazing Grilled Cheese Sandwich With These 4 Tips

There's nothing like a nice grilled cheese sandwich. So simple, yet so delicious. While not rocket science, it is possible to put out a less than stellar grilled cheese sandwich. Follow these four simple tips and you'll be able to make an amazing grilled cheese every time:

1. Butter Your Bread

Instead of placing butter (or oil) directly on the pan, spread it evenly across the outside of both slices of bread. This way you'll be able to taste the buttery goodness in each bite.

When using butter, take it out of the fridge a few hours in advance so it can reach room temperature and will spread easier.

2. Don't Slice the Bread Too Thickly

If you're slicing bread from a loaf, make sure it's not sliced too thickly. Otherwise, the bread to cheese ratio will be off. Also, the cheese might not melt properly if there's too much bread.

3. Grate Your Cheese

Of the four tips presented here, this is the most important. Grated cheese melts quicker and more evenly than sliced cheese. The result will be a sandwich that is properly cooked not just on the outside, but also on the inside.

4. Cover the Pan

I like to use a non-stick pan when making grilled cheese. But, any pan will do. You'll usually get better results with higher quality pans because they heat more evenly.

Once your pan is at medium heat, place the sandwich on the pan and then cover with a lid. This helps melt the cheese and ensures the bread won't burn before the cheese has had sufficient time to melt.

  1. Placing a heated cast iron skillet on top the sandwich is another useful technique. This is very similar to using panini grill.
